Rabbi Ya'ir Paran, great-grandson of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, stated that the Basic Law: Torah Study disgraces the Torah. He called for the state to draft haredim into the military while preserving their religious way of life.

Paran argued that meaningful change on the draft issue will only occur when financial pressure affects the haredi community directly.
