Gadi Eisenkot, a leading challenger to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, rejected building tenders in the E1 area east of Jerusalem. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich issued a sharp rebuke of the decision.

Eisenkot also raised concerns over the timing of the tenders. The E1 zone lies between Jerusalem and the Maale Adumim settlement bloc.
