The Fast of Gedaliah, observed the day after Rosh Hashanah on the third of Tishrei, commemorates the assassination of Gedaliah ben Ahikam.

He was the Babylonian-appointed governor of the remnant Jewish community in Judah following the destruction of the First Temple.
